The comparison framework: OE vs. 'same thing, cheaper'

From the outside, it looks like aftermarket parts are just the same metal in a different box. The reality is more complicated. Some aftermarket parts are excellent. Some are fine for non-critical applications. A few are dangerous because they look identical but behave differently under torque, vibration, or heat.

Take a 2017 Ford Fusion oil filter. Motorcraft makes the FL-910S, the filter that came on the car from the factory. Aftermarket filters can cost half as much. Many are perfectly serviceable. But serviceable isn't the same as known. With an oil filter, a small difference in the bypass valve setting can change oil pressure at cold start. That's not a risk I want to explain to a customer.

Dimension 1: Fit and engineering spec
